Now that Mercedes has launched the Citan compact van, the company is considering bringing the light commercial vehicle to the US. The segment in which the Citan would fight has been getting more and more crowded lately and it seems that Mercedes wants a slice of this pie.
The carmaker is currently analyzing what the Citan’s potential competitors are doing, with the list including the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200, as well as RAM’s new commercial line. The last doesn’t have a competitor on this segment on the market at the moment, but it will introduce a rebadged version of the Fiat Doblo in the course of the following year.
Mercedes is not sure about the success of the Citan due to two main aspects that could be seen as drawbacks by American consumers. First of all, the vehicle has a limited payload of 1,500 lbs. In addition, it uses front-wheel drive, not exactly the most popular layout in the US.
The pricing is also an important factor here, as the Mercedes star could push the sticker price of the Citan higher than certain buyers are willing to go.
