The first step made in the Mercedes-Benz global production network expansion was taken back in 1993, when the decision to build the first full-production plant outside of Germany was taken.
After initial investments of more than $300 million, the Mercedes-Benz Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama was opened in May 1997, also starting production of the first generation of the M-Class SUV (W163).
The overall investments in the plant represent more than $4 billion until now, with a Mercedes-Benz portfolio of three models built there until 2013 - three generations of the M-Class since 1997, one generation of the R-Class since 2005 and two generations of the GL-Class since 2006.
Starting with 2015, there will be a fourth and even a fifth model built in the American plant, with the W205 generation of the C-Class and a BMW X6-fighter to be manufactured there starting with 2015.
About $2.4 billion between 2010 and 2015, along with the creation of some additional 1,400 jobs directly at the Tuscaloosa plant will be made in connection with the two aforementioned models. MBUSI (Mercedes-Benz US International) Alabama was responsible for contributing almost $2 billion into the state Alabama state in 2012 alone, representing payrolls, taxes and investments.
