Not many people know this, but the world first ever motor race took place almost 120 years ago, from Paris to Rouen, and it was won by a car which was using a Daimler combustion engine.
In other words, the history of motorsport started in the summer of 1894, when a Peugeot Type 7 driven by Albert Lemaître and using a “Moteur système Daimler” won the first car race in history.
The twin-cylinder V-engine was a design by Gottlieb Daimler and was built under license in France, by Peugeot.
To celebrate the anniversary of twelve decades of motorsport, Mercedes-Benz Classic has adopted the “120 Year of Motor Sport” theme, combined with a host of “magical moments” from the history of motor racing.
One of the two vehicles which Mercedes-Benz Classic has built specifically for historic racing, a 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (W201), will be a “rolling ambassador” for the anniversary in 2014, with the exterior design of the model having been specially chosen and providing a visual journey through the most important decades of car racing.
