When everybody and everything around you screams "Christmas," it's hard not to get into the holiday spirit. This year, Mercedes-Benz started early, but it's OK because it did an excellent job.
Quite a few years ago, this Coca-Cola TV commercial was launched where two of the company's trucks decorated with hundreds of light bulbs passed through a hibernal background spreading the holiday cheer. The ad turned out to be so well-received Coca-Cola used it for several years and came up with some sequels as well. But the important thing to remember is that seeing it on TV was the signal that Christmas was getting closer.
Well, this year Mercedes-Benz copied the American company and built a real-life decorated coach bus. The vehicle of choice was a Travego bus, which was turned into a real Christmas fair on wheels thanks to a carefully chosen livery and a special lighting concept.
The Christmas Travego, as it's called, can simultaneously convey the warm atmosphere of Christmas, but also the coldness of the northern winter.
The concept was devised by the DesignStudio at Mannheim's bus and coach plant, while the livery and lighting were created by a company called Heymann that specializes in refining this type of vehicles.
The Christmas Travego isn't just a showpiece. The following weeks until Christmas, the festive bus will be available for hiring by any interested customer. Some have already shown their interest: the Christmas Travego will ferry the Regensburg Cathedral Choir to a selected Christmas concert. An anonymous company from Augsburg will use the bus to accompany severely disabled children to an event - free of charge, of course, and a Straubing bus and coach company intends to take some kindergarten kids to and from a Christmas market.
The once white Travego M is now completely covered in foil, while the LED strips of fairy lights come in three colors: red, green or blue. The three colors can be lit up simultaneously or in any combination, while their light can be continuous or blinking. All these things can be controlled from a driver's workstation.
So, the Coca-Cola trucks aren't alone anymore. At least not until December 28, the date when the Christmas Travego is set to be reverted back to just Travego.
