Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport Looks Ordinary at 2015 Detroit Auto Show

Just a few hours after Mercedes-Benz revealed the C450 AMG Sport models online, we managed to get them on film, live, on the showroom floor of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. What struck us first was just how similar the AMG Sport package is to the simple AMG exterior kit. For the untrained eye, it's really hard to tell the difference.

Basically, the interior details are giving away the AMG Sport compared to its lesser sibling, details like the steering wheel and other bits and pieces. Sure, the M Performance models are also extremely similar to M Sport ones but still, when one pays a premium for its 'better' car, it should also be showing it.

Just as everyone guessed long before the cars reached the North American shore to be showcased in front of a live audience, the new C 450 AMG Sport range is made up of cars using 3-liter V6 turbocharged plants.

The two turbines mounted on them allow the mills to churn out 367 HP and 517 Nm (382 lb-ft) of torque, plenty for a car of this size and more than anything the rivals are doing right now.

At the moment, the AMG Sport line from Mercedes-Benz is taking on older models like the Audi S4 and the BMW 335i. While the Ingolstadt creation has 333 HP at its disposal, the Bimmer sits even lower at 306 HP.

Looking over the acceleration numbers things are not that bad to be perfectly frank. The C450 comes only in 4Matic and 7-Speed guise and the acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 4.9 seconds. On the other hand, the BMW 335i xDrive model fitted with the 8-speed automatic gearbox will do the same sprint in 5 seconds, which is just 0.1 seconds slower.

That’s impressive considering the power gap between the two. Furthermore, the 335d xDrive model is even faster, despite being a diesel. It will do 62 mph from a standstill in 4.8 seconds.

Audi’s S4 on the other hand is just as ‘slow’ as the BMW doing the same benchmark in 5 seconds flat, with its quattro system too. However, the way the two handle will matter even more.

Furthermore, the BMW is set to get a facelift this year and rumor has it that there will be an M Performance version included of the brand new 340i model (rumored to have around 330 HP). Things are definitely heating up in this sub-niche.
