After testing the water in the autonomous area with the F 015 Luxury in Motion prototype, Mercedes-Benz are turning their attention towards a new field that might involve fully automated parking.
If you take some time to think about it, fully automated parking might show up way before the self-driving technology will populate the world's automobiles making life easier for those living in urban jungles.

The prospect of cars that could look for their spaces in a parking garage and return all by themselves controlled only by a smartphone app sounds good. Daimler and Bosch feel the same way and started a collabo that will work on this aspect through a pilot project.

But according to Daimler officials, the existing parking process will be revolutionized in the sense that the driver isn't the one who parks and then looks for his or her car.

In other words, the car will drive to a free parking slot on its own, without human intervention, after the driver got off the car in a special marked area. When the user has to leave, the car will only start and drive itself to a waiting area where it will pick up the driver.

Human-machine interaction will be done via a smartphone app, which will book a car using the car2go mobility service network. Of course, parking space occupancy sensors, cameras and communication technology is needed but this is where Bosch's expertise comes into play.

Officials are also optimistic about the short amount of time they need to have the system up and running, since Dr. Dirk Hoheisel, the responsible Board Member of Bosch, argued that "low driving speeds and the information from the car park infrastructure enable a fast implementation.”
