One of the features that make the Mercedes-Benz cars' interior exude style and finesse is the excellent use of lighting. People who work in interior design know that lighting can turn a nice room into a beautiful one, and the same goes for the inside of a car.
If you've ever been inside a new-generation S-Class at night, you know what that means. There are LED strips seamlessly integrated into the design of the dashboard, the door panels and everything else around you that makes the S-Class' cabin an even more magical place once the night falls. You'll feel so pampered, so disconnected with the outside world that it almost seems unreal.

Well, now there's a way to reproduce that feeling in your home as well, thanks to a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Style (the special division that allows the talented Mercedes designers to work on other projects, unrelated to the automotive industry) and premium Italian light design company Artemide. The fruit of this joint venture is called "Ameluna" and it's a pendant lamp inspired by the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy, but also the underwater world.

The lamp has a perfectly circular form when viewed from above or underneath, but from the side, it reveals a dynamic curve that gives the Ameluna a very organic aspect. Thanks to an innovative optic solution expression of the Artemide optoelectronic applied research, part of the light emitted by the 288 LEDs is scattered through the transparent body, making the Ameluna look like a bioluminescent jellyfish that floats in your living room. Further highlighting the product's hi-tech nature is its control method: the Ameluna is operated via a smartphone app.

Artemide as well as Mercedes-Benz are well known for their high demand for design and the creation of iconic products. Within the collaboration my team and I created an exclusive designer piece that bears the potential of a modern design icon,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG. “The pendant lamp ‘Ameluna combines beauty and intelligence and hence perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity.

The Ameluna - which is a combination of Artemide, Mercedes-Benz and “luna,” Italian for “moon” - is displayed at the “Light + Building” trade fair, which takes place between March 13 and 18, 2016, in Frankfurt am Main. No word on pricing, which is probably a good thing in case you weren't sitting down.
