Keeping true to its commitment of electrifying a significant portion of its car fleet in the coming years, German carmaker Mercedes-Benz announced on Monday (August 19) the launch of the plug-in hybrid technology in two of its main ranges for the first time.
The stars of the three-pointed star brand in the compact segment, the the A- and B-Class models, will from now on have their own PHEV variants. For now, there were three models announced by the carmaker in the range - the A 250 e, A 250 e Sedan, and B 250 e.

All three models use the same 1.33-liter four-cylinder engine that was paired to an electric motor and a 15.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. Because these compact cars lack a separate 12-volt starter, the fitting of this new hardware means that for the first time a Mercedes car’s combustion engine is started by means of an electric motor.

The total power output of the combined system is 218 hp and 450 Nm, allowing for 0 to 100 km acceleration time of 6.6 seconds for the A-Class sedan, on the way to a top speed of 235 kph (146 mph). In all-electric mode, the car has a range of 70 km (43 miles) and a top speed of 140 kph (87 mph).

The batteries can be charged from any available power outlet. In case a 7.4 kW Wallbox with alternating current is used, charging time from 10 to 100 percent is 1 hour 45 minutes. When a DC solution is used, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 25 minutes.

The PHEV variants of the A-Class hatch and sedan are already available for order, with prices starting at €36,943.55 and €37,300.55, respectively. The B-Class PHEV will become available in a few weeks and will sell from €37,663.50.

All three cars use a modified variant of the MBUX infotainment system that allows the vehicles to be set in new plug-in hybrid drive programs, Electric and Battery Level.
