Rumors hinting that Mercedes-Benz is working to create a roomier smart fortwo, probably inspired by the forfour model they launch some years ago, are not new. But it appears that the German manufacturer has already found a partner for such a car. According to a report by manager-magazin.de, Mercedes is currently holding preliminary talks with Renault for what might be a new four-seater to be sold under the smart brand.
Details are obviously in the very early stage, so nobody can tell for sure if Mercedes and Renault and indeed discussing on a potential smart forfour-like model but, as we said, rumors surround a roomier smart aren't new.
Back in March, autoexpress.co.uk wrote that a so-called fortwo +2 was in the works, a model based on the fortwo but offering room for four passengers. The look was rumored to be the same with the fortwo, excepting the rear doors, while the engines will remain exactly the same. It would come with a slightly different wheelbase to increase space for rear passengers. The car was projected to arrive in 2012 or later but still, there's no confirmation on the matter.
Nevertheless, Daimler actually hinted that a roomier model might indeed be produced but refused to provide more details, leaving the subject open for speculation.
“By varying the wheelbase length of the current mid-engine platform, we could develop additional models, with 2+1 or 2+2 seating,” Anders-Sundt Jensen, head of the Daimler subsidiary, told Automotive News Europe, back in mid-March.
