Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, UK, just signed off their last ever Formula 1 V8 engine to ever leave the factory and were nice enough to make a video about the proceedings.
The V8 unit with the name FF73 is seen in the following footage as it goes through a procedure that the peeps who test it call BIPO – or Break In, Pass Off. The operation is apparently following the same steps that each Formula 1 engine must go through before being passed as fit for racing.
As expected, with the engine being the last ever V8 to leave their factory, there is a bit of sentimentality involved among the engine-builders. Actually, strike that, we noticed a truckload of feels in the five minutes or so of footage.
As you probably know, Formula 1 regulations will no longer allow V8 engines from 2014, with all the teams being required to switch to a home appliance-sounding turbocharged V6 that's paired with a mighty KERS unit. Unfortunately, there isn't a single V8 sound in following video, but its subject was sad enough anyway so it's probably for the better.
