Mercedes-AMG Project One Roadster Looks Amazing, Sadly Won’t Happen

The road-going car that’s closest to a Formula 1 single-seater. That’s what the Mercedes-AMG Project One is all about, and of course, never before imaginable performance. If the newcomer weren’t a fixed-head coupe, the Mercedes-AMG flagship would have been even closer to the W08 EQ Power+ that dominates the F1 grid.

Italian automotive designer Evren Milano imagined how the Project One would look like as a roadster, taking to his Photoshop skills to create what Mercedes-AMG won’t. Not only does the hybrid hypercar look even more aggressive than it does in reality, but the adjacent rendering makes us wonder how good the turbo’d 1.6-liter V6 would sound like without a roof in the way.

Mercedes-AMG is already thinking about what to do after all 275 examples of the Project One will be delivered to their rightful owners, and the future seems to be electric. Daimler AG head Dieter Zetsche recently suggested that Formula E technology will be crucial for the company’s future, but the change from 48-volt to mild hybrid, then PHEV to full electric, will happen gradually.

As it is, however, the Project One promises to be worthy of its $2.7 million suggested retail price. Not only does the Mercedes-AMG bellwether have what it takes to drop a record-setting Nurburgring lap, but the electrically-driven front axle will ensure blistering straight-line acceleration. According to its maker, the Race Start mode will allow the Project One to hit 200 km/h (124 mph) in under six seconds. By comparison, the Bugatti Chiron hits that speed in 6.1s, which is mighty impressive considering the Bug’s curb weight.

Confirmed to go into production in 2019, the Project One is expected to see the light of day in the United Kingdom. The scenario is highly probable considering the Project One shares bits with the W08 F1 car, and because the F1 team is based in Brackley and operates a facility in the village of Brixworth.

If you were planning on dropping your cash at the most impressive hypercar of the moment, tough luck! All 275 units are spoken for, and that’s that.
