The three-pointed star returned to Formula 1 as a works team in 2010, after Brawn GP was acquired and changed to Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Though German by origin, the outfit is based in Brackley, UK, and the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 M08 EQ Power+ engine is made in neighboring Brixworth. It’s pretty obvious, then, that the circumstances are right for Mercedes-AMG to manufacture the awe-inspiring Project One hypercar in the United Kingdom.
Revealed in the flesh at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Project One will enter production sometime in 2019, with the build rate set at approximately one example per day. Costing more than $2.7-million and with a production run of 275 units, that’s a lot of money in the bank for Mercedes’ performance division, which will put an end to Project One production by decade’s closure.
Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes-AMG head honcho Tobias Moers suggested that the hypercar imbued with F1 tech inside and out will likely see the light of day in the country where most F1 teams are based. From the report: “The new hypercar’s engine and many of its body, chassis and suspension parts are already planned to be made in the UK alongside Formula 1 components at Mercedes’ F1 facilities in Brixworth and Brackley.” Sounds right, alright!
Taking into consideration the Project One doesn’t share too many things with the rest of Merc’s range, it makes sense to make the 1,020-hp hypercar in the Albion. Managing director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance, Andy Cowell, said that it would be possible “to set up Project One engine manufacture alongside F1 engine assembly in a new building at Brixworth works, incorporating a new and exceptionally high-tech dynamometer.”
Speaking of the engine, the 1.6-liter mill reportedly shares the block and cylinder heads with the M08 EQ Power+, as well as the e-turbocharger and pneumatic valve springs. This connection to the F1 car’s powerplant is the reason why the turbocharged six-cylinder needs a rebuild every 50,000 km.
