The third and final pre-season testing session took place yesterday at the Bahrain International Circuit, with Lewis Hamilton jumping behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W05 single seater fro the last time before the season starts at Melbourne.
The morning didn't start at all well for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team, with the engineers discovering a problem with the F1 W05's transmission at around 04:00 AM, which obviously delayed the testing session's start as they tried to get the car turned around.
Lewis Hamilton got to start his first run at 12:40 local time, completing just five full laps before the lunch break but then managed to put 65 more laps under his belt in the afternoon.
After almost two weeks of pre-season testing, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Team managed to complete the highest mileage of any F1 constructor this year, with a total of 4973 km (3090 miles).
Lewis Hamilton: “This has definitely been the most challenging winter I’ve experienced and the car is still very much a work in progress, but we’ve learnt a lot over the course of these last few weeks and overall it’s been a good winter of testing for us. There’s been an incredible amount of work put in by the team back at the two factories and on track. I have to say a special thanks to the crew here today who had a tough task in front of them but never lost their cool.
It was a tough start to the day but they managed to get the car turned around for me to complete some good laps in the afternoon, which was a fantastic effort. There’s so much to learn with these new cars; it’s just mind-blowing and I don’t think anybody can be fully ready for the challenge of this season. But I feel as ready as I can be and I’m looking forward to seeing where we are in Melbourne.”
With a total of 70 laps driven yesterday, Lewis not only put his team in the first spot as far as total testing mileage goes but his fastest lap time of 1:33.278 put him on top of the time sheets.
The 2014 Formula 1 Championship starts in the 14-16 March weekend, with the regular season opener taking place at Melbourne, in Australia.
