Mercedes-AMG GT3 Racecar Teased Prior to Geneva Motor Show Debut

With the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG currently a memory of days long past, the three-pointed star manufacturer decided to make ends meet by replacing the model with the Mercedes-AMG GT. Designed, developed and made by the Affalterbach skunkworks, this uber coupe isn’t as rowdy as its forerunner, but it’s a neat means of motorized fun nonetheless.

On September 9th, 2014, Nico Rosberg drove a yellow Mercedes-AMG GT S at the international launch event of the German supercar and Merc stated the obvious during that presentation: the 911 should take note. Of course that’s boasting about, trying to woo the media and gearheads, but thing is, this two-door coupe has a number of tricks up its sleeve that may upset Porsche.

The 911-fighting machine in S configuration is packing a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 motor, rated at 510 PS (503 HP) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). What those figures translate to is a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) run of 3.8 seconds, which isn’t shabby for a road-going vehicle that doesn’t try too much. A roadster variant isn’t available at the moment, but the peeps from AMG prepared something rather enticing for the go-fast crowd.

Yup, it’s the Mercedes-AMG GT3, teased by a couple of sketches you can admire just a scroll below. Beware though - this isn’t a road-going machine, but a racer developed to comply with FIA GT3 regulations. Boiled down to the core, it all means that what we’re dealing with here is a customer sport racing car for gentlemen racers, which replaces the jaw-dropping SLS AMG GT3 that debuted in 2010.

At first glance, the sketches show that carbon fiber has been extensively used in key areas, with the addition of a roll cage, extra vents and air intakes, a ginormous wing at the rear and a rear bumper that’s shaming Kim Kardashian’s best asset (no pun intended, hehe). Not much is know about the mechanical touchups, but look forward to the Geneva Motor Show in March for more intel and live photos of the GT3.
