The AMG GT is still a young car and shows great potential to do what few have even dared: challenge the 911. But we're pretty sure everybody involved with the project knows that without more versions, it stands no chance against the 20-strong Porsche 911 army, which ranges from 350 base models to hardcore GT3 track tool and the supercar fighting Turbo S.
If there's one variation desperately desired by all Mercedes fans, that would be the roadster. However, company bosses have remained reluctant to green light the development of such a car for production.
Looking at the latest renderings created by Theophilus Chin, we have trouble understanding why. He created an AMG GT roadster with a metal skin over its head as opposed to the fabric one used by the old SLS. It makes it look more refined and expensive.
The problem is that Mercedes has tried to make way too many 2-door models for its own good. There's the slow-selling SLK, the uber-expensive SL and now the S-Class Coupe which seems to be drawing in all the attention. Pretty soon there's even going to be an S-Class Cabrio 4-seater.
But the AMG GT roadster is what the SL should have been from the beginning. It's light, sporty and aggressive, not a cruiser for rich people from Miami or Monaco. It's rather ironic that at the original SL (Sport Leicht) evolved into a heavy grand tourer and Mercedes needs to be wooed into at least considering to make something that just looks so gorgeous. Whatever happened to the people who made the original Gullwing on a tubular chassis? Guess they started making too many SUVs.
