Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster Not Likely, But Here's a Rendering

Now that we’ve seen the Mercedes-AMG GT, many are waiting for the Roadster incarnation. Well... they shouldn’t, as this might never arrive. The German carmaker’s engineers may have already completed the project, but the production green light is not too likely at the moment, due to cannibalization reasons.

Yes, the engineers probably already have the blueprints, as such cars get their open top versions designed from the very beginning - last minute top-chopping jobs would compromise the structure.

Alas, an open-air AMG GT could put a dent in the armor of the SL, a roadster that has always had a special place in the Mercedes line-up. We’ll remind you the SL is already a bit pressured by the upcoming S-Class Cabriolet.

To be more precise, the differentiation between the SL and the S-Class Cabriolet would have about the same magnitude as that separating the SL and the AMG GT Roadster, with the only exception, and one that makes a difference, being that while the S-Class Cabrio will have four seats, the SL would have to battle the AMG GT Roadster for the customers who deem two seats as enough for a sportscar.

We’ll have to wait until October to get the pricing for the 462 hp AMG GT and the 510 hp AMG GTS, but, if we are to judged by the estimated starting price of 100k (be it EUR or USD), not even the financial side would bring a massive differentiation between the new model and the SL.

If the story does go on this way, we’ll be sorry for the AMG GT. All its competitors pack open air versions and, besides, this is a car that really fits the pleasures of open top motoring. Even the SLS AMG Roadster will be unhappy about missing a spiritual successor.

Truth be told, the Mercedes SL has a strong Grand Tourer aroma, whereas the AMG GT is pure sportscar, so we’ve keeping one tenth of a finger crossed - who knows, maybe Merc will build an AMG GT Roadster. Regardless, we’ve decided to bring you a rendering of the AMG GT Roadster. Just don’t let the cheesy shade of Purple distract you from the lines of the car.
