Mercedes-Benz are conducting their usual ritual with new cars, that is making them Formula 1 official vehicles. This year however, the line-up looks pretty darn good, because the AMG GT S is involved, along with the C 63 S Estate.
Ladies and gentlemen, behold the new Official Safety Car for the FIA Formula One World Championship: the Mercedes-AMG GT. The car will respond to situations including bad weather and accidents and will be equipped accordingly in order to properly get the job done.
The AMG GT S will replace the SLS AMG, after the latter spent no less than five years in service (from 2012 to 2015 in its GT version). The drivetrain has been kept intact for the job it has to carry out during this year’s Formula 1 season, so the coupe will rely on the same 4.0-liter biturbo V8 delivering 510 HP and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft).
As a safety car, the AMG GT S will receive the usual standard equipment required by regulations: FIA and F1 logos, LED signaling functions (orange and green), a TV camera mounted on the roof, a special number plate and iPads, WLAN connectivity and bucket seats.
The Mercedes C 63 S Estate is also joining efforts with its sportier peer after it was named Official Medical Car of the upcoming Formula 1 Championship. Its suspension was tweaked as the car is supposed to carry three to four people plus emergency equipment - including a defibrillator and a respirator - in high-speed conditions. The rear was also modified to accommodate one or two assistant medics.
On the outside, the C 63 S Medical Car is wearing the F1 and FIA logos and received headlamps and taillights with signaling functions along with the traditional Medical Car number plate.
