Only about three months separate us from the unveil of the highly-expected Mercedes-AMG GT (C190), otherwise known as the second ever model developed completely in house by the nutty engineers from Affalterbach.
Yesterday marked the unveil of the car's own microsite on the Mercedes-AMG GmbH website, a place where a number of teasers and limited information about the upcoming sports car will be revealed until the beginning of September, when the Mercedes-AMG GT will be officially unveiled in all its glory.
Despite only offering two seats, the new AMG model is set to steal some clients from the 2+2 Porsche 911, while its main competitors will probably be the Jaguar F-Type Coupe and the Aston Martin Vantage.
As some of you already know, the Mercedes-AMG GT will be the first car to feature an all-new AMG engine, various versions of which will help power quite a large number of other models in the nearby future.
Based on two M133 four-cylinders from the “45 AMG” series conjoined in order to form a V8, the new powerplant promises to bring around 500 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque.
Paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transaxle transmission borrowed from the SLS AMG, the twin-turbocharged V8 should help the Mercedes-AMG GT accelerate from naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) in well under four seconds, while also making it sip fuel like a naturally-aspirated V6 from a decade ago.
Just like the SLS AMG, on whose aluminium spaceframe the car is actually based, the AMG GT will be front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive, which should give it a neutral but also highly-hoonable driving style in typical AMG fashion.
Expect more details about the model in the upcoming months, as they will start appearing on the dedicated AMG GT microsite on a weekly basis. Until it gets unveiled though, let's take a look at a camouflaged pre-production model torturing its tires on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, shot by BridgeToGantry.
