There's little time left until September, when the Mercedes-AMG GT bruiser is slated to be officially unveiled. But 'til that moment comes, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has dropped the full details of the all-new M178 powerhouse fitted under the bonnet of the sports model.
Before going into the fine details, let's just take a moment and mourn the discontinued Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and its bonkers 6.2-liter naturally aspirated M159. Now wipe yer tears and let's move on to the AMG GT, the spiritual successor of the SLS AMG.

Bearing the C190 codename, the Mercedes-AMG GT won't feature the show-off gullwing doors as its predecessor, nor the naturally aspirated sense of occasion. But fret not 'cause the three-pointed star and the AMG skunkworks are prepping something that'll blow your socks off. The AMG GT will be smaller in size than the SLS AMG, a tad less powerful, but it'll be way more sophisticated and less expensive as well.

Internally known as the M178, the 4-liter biturbo V8 mill propelling Mercedes-AMG's all-new model is a very curious powerplant. As opposed to most other turbo'd engines, this model's turbochargers are mounted inside the V configuration of the mill. Why? Benefits include a compact engine design, optimum response and low exhaust gas emissions. Dry sump lubrication is also on the menu, while the whole motor boasts a dry weight of only 209 kilos (460 pounds).

Although it's got a 10.5:1 compression ratio and you can rev all the way to the 7,200 rpm redline, this biturbo V8 is Euro 6 compliant. In terms of technology, the AMG-designed powerplant is closely related to the 2-liter turbo engine in the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG. The V8 and the four-pot share the same bore/stroke ratio and similar piezo injectors.

So what about the oomph? Well, you're served with 510 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque distributed very flat from 1,750 all the way to 4,750 rpm. Thanks to fuel-saving technologies such as ECO start/stop and alternator management, the Mercedes-AMG GT prides itself with a combined gasoline consumption of only 28.8 U.K. mpg, which equals to 24 U.S. mpg or 9.8 liters / 100 km.
