Mercedes-Benz has just revealed a whole heap of brand new cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show, including the first S-Class Cabriolet in living memory. However, they're not done yet, as the SUV revolution that began in January with the GLE Coupe will soon enter a new stage. The GLC Coupe should join up with this GLS full-size model at a major motor show, likely Detroit.
In case you don't know what the GLS is, we're going to tell you. According to the new Mercedes naming strategy, that's what we're going to call the replacement for the current Alabama-built GL-Class. It's more like a facelift than anything else, but new engines will become available too.
While the 3-liter twin-turbo V6 is already fitted to the GL450 4Matic SUV, we expect a slightly cheaper GLS400 with 30 less horsepower to be added. The 4.7-liter V8 of the 550 model is also getting replaced by the newer 4-liter without any loss of power.
Of course, the rendering made by Virtuel-Car is the full-fat GLS 63 S made by the fellows in Affalterbach. It's based on actual spy photos taken in the wild and combines the current GL-Class body with wider wings and a sexy front end. Large air intakes, chrome trim and black mesh are all part of the transformation.
Some have suggested the 5.5-liter AMG Biturbo engine is about to be replaced by the 4-liter used by the AMG GT. We're not holding our breath. Instead, we suspect the current engine will get a boost from 550 to 585 PS.
It's been speculated on a number of occasions that a Maybach version of the GLS will also be produced. Considering the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class goes all the way down to an S400 model, powered by a V6, we wouldn't be surprised if the uber-luxury SUV rumors are true.
