Not long after the GLE Coupe was officially unveiled, Mercedes decided to also bring out the AMG version that has a title nobody expected: GLE63 S Coupe. The ’S’ in the middle suggests that there’s also a different model in the works, one that has less power to begin with.
However, we’re not here to discuss future plans but to take a look at how the Affalterbach division plans to take on BMW’s Motorsport creation, the X6 M.

The GLE63 S Coupe comes fitted with a 5.5-liter biturbo plant making 585 HP and 561 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque, numbers just slightly better than its rival’s. The BMW has a 4.4-liter V8 biturbo plant under the bonnet making 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque.

Both cars are all-wheel drive and both use 7-speed dual clutch gearboxes, the Mercedes-AMG model being fitted with 4Matic in combination with a brand new SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-Tronic box. Therefore, the acceleration of the new Coupe SUV to 96 km/h (60 mph) will be done in 4.2 seconds.

Compared to the BMW, that is 0.2 seconds slower but as all auto enthusiasts know, straight-line acceleration bragging rights are not everything in this segment.

The steering was also changed, the AMG model sporting the so-called AMG Ride Control sports suspension in combination with Active Curve System and Sports Direct-Steer. Basically, a lot of thought has been put into the way this car handles and steers.

As far as the design goes, the GLE63 has an aggressive front end that doesn’t differ by a lot compared to the AMG Sport version. There are single bar grilles up front along with large air intakes on the sides, just like on the less powerful models.

LED headlights come as standard along with the four-pipe exhaust that should sound better than the Bimmer’s if previous models are any indicator.

Inside the cabin, the differences are even less noticeable. There’s a flat bottomed steering wheel along with Nappa leather seats and a new instrument cluster that has fake carbon fiber in it that simply doesn’t cut it for us.

The AMG logo goes everywhere, including on the new floor mats while a Harman Kardon sound system is standard on all models. We’re live on the set of Detroit and we’ll be bringing you the first live photos of the car in a couple of minutes.
