Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to building the G-Class with a bed, but there's never been a pickup truck incarnation of the AMG-massaged G Wagen (the G 63 AMG 6x6 doesn't count here, since its six-wheeler form means this is only accessible to a handful of enthusiasts, both financially and in terms of actual driving). Fortunately, the rendering sitting before us comes to change this, introducing a Mercedes-AMG G 63 truck.
We're looking at a regular cab here, so this contraption would only cater to the transportation needs of two. Oh, and as for the spare wheel, the solution pictured here is obviously not the only one, as this could always remain attached to the tailgate, as is the case with the actual G 63.
And since this virtual build is based on the current, all-new Gelandewagen, with its sharper driving dynamics, this would be one hell of a performance truck.
If you're in the market for a pickup, this sort of pixel play will only raise questions - why doesn't the three-pointed star offer such a G-Class derivative, with our without the AMG badging, especially since the U.S. market shows so much love to this body style?
For one, the German automaker did go through the X-Class experiment that saw the company perform badge surgery on a Nissan Navara, albeit with the disappointing sales determining Mercedes to pull the plug on the project (production kicked off in November 2017 and is set to come to a halt this month).
Come to think of it, customers from Down Under can grab a G pickup truck, albeit with this being based on the G-Class Professional, the commercial incarnation that evolved on the platform of the 1979 original SUV. So we're talking about a completely different proposal here.
Speaking of which, the hefty price tag of a vehicle like the one rendered here, would mean the vehicle should rely on image-generated sales more than anything else, even if the bed was added to a non-AMG G 550.
So while the market does include premium/performance pickup trucks, these are generally the siblings of more affordable machines that actually do the blue-collar work. As such, if you're looking for this type of contraption, a custom build is the way to go.
