Mercedes-AMG E43 4MATIC Looking Good in Black in First Official Video

If the outgoing Mercedes-Benz E-Class had two AMG performance versions, the new generation will have three. That is without even considering the different body styles, in which case the number will grow significantly.

We're still to see a new E-Class out on the road, but production has started and deliveries are being made, so it won't be long until they become common sightings. But just two months after the official launching event held at the North American International Auto Show in January, Mercedes-AMG is already presenting a more powerful version of the sedan.

This is the model that should have been named the Mercedes-Benz E450 AMG 4MATIC, but since Daimler decided to drop the AMG Sport line and brand the less powerful versions as whole-rights AMG models, the difference will be made strictly by the numerical characters. We have no idea whether that was a good marketing call or not, but we're not that interested either, to be honest. What we care about is how good the new Mercedes-AMG E43 4MATIC is.

Since we can only judge it on paper at this moment, it sounds pretty impressive: 401 hp @ 6,100 rpm obtained from the 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine that can be found on a host of similar Mercedes models - think of the new AMG SLC43 roadster, for instance. With a total weight of less than 1.8 tons (4,000 lb), the AMG E43 4MATIC is capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds, with a top speed rated at 250 km/h (155 mph).

Responsible for that lightning fast acceleration is the standard four-wheel-drive system (with rear-wheel bias, as all sporty cars should) and the nine-speed automatic transmission. The car also comes with sports suspension as standard, but most of the E43's parameters can be changed on the fly based on the driving mode selected by the driver: Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus.

Mercedes-AMG is aiming to offer more than decent performances in a package that is less shouty, less obvious than the more aggressive E63 model. Judging by this dynamic clip, we'd say it's nailed it right in the head, as the E43 looks like an assured vehicle that plays the elegance card very well, right up to the point when something else is required of it. Then it puts on its running shoes and beats Usain Bolt's 100 meters sprint time with ease. This sort of cars are pretty hard to come by.
