Mercedes-AMG C63 Sedan, T-Modell, Edition 1 Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show

Mercedes-AMG C63 sounds a little funny, innit? Too bad though the 'Benz' was dropped as a rebranding stunt designed to promote the AMG GT and AMG C63 as blood brothers originating from Affalterbach, Germany. As its two-door GT counterpart, the new C63 also replaces the 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 for a 4-liter biturbocharged tower-of-power.

It uses virtually the same powerplant as the AMG GT, but the engine powering the new AMG C-Class isn't internally dubbed M178, but M177. Of course, there are some minor differences between the two, but at the end of the day these are so small it doesn't really matter. Here comes the most curious of differences:

The Mercedes-AMG C63 is more powerful than the Mercedes-AMG GT

Yup, you heard that right. The entry-level C63 gets 476 ponies and 650 Nm of torque, translating to 14 more horsepower than the base AMG GT and similar torque as the hotter AMG GT S. In comparison to the two-door super coupe, both the sedan and T-Modell AMG C63 make do with a seven-speed multi-clutch gearbox, not a dual-clutch automatic. This unit promises to shift as fast as a multi-clutch auto can.

As for the Mercedes-AMG C63 S, this bad boy turns the grunt knob all the way to eleven, packing a hefty 510 horsepower (similar to the AMG GT S) and 700 Nm of torque (516 lb-ft), which is 50 Nm more than the range-topping Mercedes-AMG GT S. But despite the added output, the base C63 weighs 1,640 kilograms (3,615 lbs), which is 100 kg (220 lbs) more than the entry-level Mercedes-AMG GT, so the power advantage is more or less balanced out by the extra weight and the different type of automatic gearbox.

What about performance figures?

In C63 guise, the sedan does the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) run in 4.1 seconds, while the T-Modell (estate) does it one tenth of a second slower at 4.2 clicks. As for the C63 S, the four-door sedan can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4 seconds flat, with the C63 S T-Modell is able to do the same feat in 4.1 seconds. By all accounts, that's pretty fast. Couple those figures to three-stage adjustable dampers and a bespoke steering setup for the W205 C-Class and you get an exhilarating Merc.

The front axle's dynamics are enhanced by four-link suspension, a wide track and independent steering knuckles, while the rear employs a multilink system with independent mounts and an increased negative camber compared to normal variants of the C-Class. Whereas the normal C63 gets a mechanical locking rear diff, the C63 S comes with an electronic version.

Every Mercedes-AMG C63 is fitted with 245/40 R18 rubber at the front and 265/40 R18 tires at the rear, while the S model gains 245/35 R19 front and 265/35 R19 rear performance rubber. In terms of braking, all models (including the limited run Edition 1 C63) use 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the rear with the option of enhanced ceramic discs available.

Does is stack up well in terms of practicality, tech and comfort?

About that, think of the C63 sedan as a four-door version of the AMG GT that can seat five, provide great all-round visibility, room for a week's worth of shopping and space for a small dog as well if you are a cool dad and go for the C63 T-Modell (estate). In addition to that, the interior is all W205 C-Class, with the addition of more supportive seats, a sportier flat bottom steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and AMG-specific buttons to control the damping, ESP, traction control and the speed the tranny swaps cogs.

Fuel economy is also an important aspect of a vehicle that boasts with such levels of comfort and space, so here's Johnny: the Mercedes-AMG C63 AMG drinks 8.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (34.4 UK mpg or 28.6 US mpg) on the combined cycle and produces 192 grams of CO2 / kilometer, while the C63 S consumes 8.4 liters of petrol per 100 km (33.6 UK mpg or 28 US mpg) and emits 195 g of CO2 per km.

Unfortunately, the ugly media screen protruding like a wart from the dash is also there, which spoils the rest of the beautifully crafted and designed cabin. Last but not least, both variants and body styles of the elegant but fire breathing Mercedes-AMG C63 will be put on sale in Europe later this month, while first deliveries of the brand new model are slated for early 2015.
