The A35, which is a new entry-level AMG model, is rumored to debut at the beginning of October during the Paris Motor Show. Which means this spy video could be one of the last and most interesting.
Development of the A35 started out slow with the car boasting lackluster exhaust and wheels. But the look has been chiseled down to the point where we're happy to call it a Golf R rival.
While it's not the last word when it comes to hot hatch fun, the Golf R is a real money-maker due to its blend of speed and refinement. The A35 will undoubtedly emulate that while also adding a bit of AMG flair.
And that flair should come in the form of a small electric motor wedged between the 2-liter turbo and 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox. This EQ boost system will smooth out the lag lumps and help deliver a maximum output of 340 HP and 430 Nm of torque, almost as much as the original A45 from five years ago.
The sound isn't as awesome as an RS3, but the A35 has a nice, deep tone that's sure to find many fans. What's interesting is that Mercedes managed this with only two mufflers.
As for the styling, it's very similar to the A-Class AMG Line, featuring cutouts that vent air through the front bumper and a deeper grille. Sure, there's a wing, but it's designed to look discreet. Seeing it go round the famous banked carousel of the Nurburgring got us all excited. I mean, who's to say you can't enjoy a car if it's not the ultimate version?
The only downside we can foresee is that the EQ boost hybrid system will add too much weight, as it did with the CLS 53. But as long as the emissions testers are happy, we can live the compromise.
