E-bikes are great for people who don’t want to bother with a motorcycle license and everything else that comes with it, but they have limited safety features, room for the rider and storage space. On the other hand, scooters are more comfortable and better suited for long commutes, but they do require a license.
Zebra has created something that looks like a scooter, but is legally considered an e-bike. The main purpose of this was to make it accessible to everyone, with no license required. This unusual hybrid is actually built with bicycle pedals that are fully operable. Plus, it features a 750W motor, with a maximum speed of 20 mph (32 kph), which is the speed limit required for class 2 electric bicycles.
As weird as it might look like, you can ride your Zebra on any bicycle path. But, at the same time, you’ll be getting the benefit of a sleek silhouette with an oversized seat, that also has plenty of storage room. The scooter/moped design also includes several safety features, such as front and rear turn signals, front and rear hydraulic brakes, a tail stop and a rear-view mirror.
Zebra has 3 available versions, that differ in terms of range. Zebra Z1 has a 35 miles (56 km) range, Zebra ZX1 has a 60 miles (96 km) range, and Zebra ZX2 has a 120 miles (193 km) range. All of the models have the same top speed and are classified as class 2 e-bikes. They are also able to climb up hills, with ZX1 and ZX2 having a slightly higher climbing ability than the basic version.
Zebra e-bikes are available for order in the U.S., except for Alaska and Hawaii. They are currently on sale, with prices ranging from $1,795 to $2,795.
