Eco Marine Power (EMP) has recently announced their newest high level design plans for an unmanned surface vessel (USV). It is a ground-braking technology vessel that will cruise the ocean with up to 6 knots. And that is while it only uses the solar energy it gets through its marine-grade, flexible solar panels.
The Aquarius USV project began in 2011 and, according to its creators, a prototype is expected to reach the water in 2015. The vessel will mostly be used for data collection and monitoring purposes and is one of the projects that Japan-based EMP develops. The company is actually focusing on developing technology aimed at reducing fuel and emissions for shipping in the world.

Another example for their work is the Energy Sail, a vessel that can be fitted with solar panels to harness green power. In our case though the craft can be supplied with power via ship or shore rapid battery charging technology, as well.

Aquarius will be fitted with compact low power marine computer systems and a sensor pack including several unique sensors developed by the Japanese company. These sensors will be able to collect data from above and below the waterline and this data can either be stored onboard the vessel and/or transmitted back to a ship or to an shore office. Data transmission will be possible via Wi-Fi, mobile phone or satellite connections.

Long story short, we are looking at a super cool small vessel measuring 16.4 ft (5 m) in length, with a beam (widest span) of 26.2 ft (8m) and a draft (depth in water) of 3.3 ft (1m). It will be constructed from lightweight composite and marine-grade aluminum and will have a cruising speed of up to 6 knots (6.9mph - 11.112 km/h).
