Meet Stewart, the Innovative Device that Should Mediate Trust Between Man & Machine

In case you’ve been feeling a little bit amused lately, we’re here to turn the page and discuss a subject of utmost sobriety. Our journey will take us around a hot subject carmakers are talking about today: autonomous cars. What makes things rather interesting is the approach that is, possibly for the first time, from the eyes of the driver. After all, the motorist is the one who is supposed to ride in a car that works by itself if these creations hit the road.

So let’s assume self-driving autos eventually take over the streets. Safety figures rise to percents never met before, and everybody is happy. But what are we, the drivers all supposed to do? Retire? Crocheting? Not if you think like this Dutch industrial designer we won’t. Felix Ros apparently sees things different, considering he has just presented his idea of a device that should mediate the trust between man and machine.

Meet Stewart, a tactile interface designed for an entirely autonomous car. It looks like a futuristic joystick, and the driver is supposed to put his hand on it. “Stewart’s objective is to accommodate a healthy relation between man and machine, to be achieved by an intuitive and expressive form of interaction,” Ros explains. According to the designer, this device provides the driver with constant updates about the car’s behaviour and its intentions.

If the motorist doesn't agree on the vehicle’s next course of action, he will manipulate Stewart to change it. The point? You learn from your smart car, the car learns from you. Call it a form of personalization for the future autonomous car to be.

Will this be the solution to getting rid of the gap between regular auto driving and autonomous vehicles? Probably not, but it’s a start.
