Now this is an interesting and at the same time awkward piece of news. After announcing its Formula One comeback as an engine supplier for McLaren, Honda is rumored to work on a powerplant that will be fitted in the British company’s future entry-level sportscar as well.
We know this idea sounds more than crazy and rather unlikely, but Motor Trend claims that McLaren’s Porsche 911 competitor could be powered by a Honda racing engine, maybe based on the new Formula One turbocharged 1.6-liter V6.
In fact, that’s not just “rather unlikely”, we really think it highly unlikely. Why would anyone want to buy a Honda-powered McLaren? We’re talking about some serious heritage here and a Formula One cooperation doesn’t necessarily translate into a road car project.
We bet that the future so-called entry-level McLaren will be powered by a detuned version of the company’s 3.8-liter V8, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any new info on the subject.
