McLaren, Vodafone Eye Jenson Button Move

Although Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld have recently been linked with a racing seat alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren Mercedes next year, it has now surfaced in the media that reigning champion Jenson Button might bring the “Number 1” back to Woking for a second consecutive year.

Amid constant media reports suggesting that Button might part ways with Brawn GP at the end of the season because of contractual problems – the 29-year old Brit seems to demand a much bigger salary than in 2009 – McLaren is likely to step in and “steal” the Somerset-born driver from Brackley.

With Heikki Kovalainen likely to be ousted from Woking at the end of the season, McLaren's team principal Martin Whitmarsh admitted that his outfit is now evaluating its options for next season. Surely having two world champions, who are also friends outside the track, both British and driving for a British team, lined up for the world championship next year would boost the outfit considerably in 2010.

We've talked to a number of drivers. It wouldn't be appropriate to say more than that. We'll hire the two best drivers available to us as we always have,” said Whitmarsh, regarding the matter.

In addition, team sponsors Vodafone also expressed their desire to have two world champions compete for their team in the championship, and “would welcome the tantalizing lineup”, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Any team would like to have two world champions in their ranks. Vodafone would be very keen on the idea,” some internal sources from within the Vodafone company were quoted as saying by the aforementioned publication.
