McLaren to Scrap F-duct for Monza

McLaren Mercedes have announced quite a bold move for the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled to take place on the high-speed circuit of Monza on September 10-12. According to some reports, the Woking based team will not run their innovative F-duct system in Italy, despite the fact that this particular device was actually designed for long straights, such as the one at Monza.

The F-duct was initially developed only by McLaren, after which the concept was copied and implemented by other teams as well. The aerodynamic solution is believed to add some 6 to 10 mph to the car in straight line, where airflow around the car and through to the rear wing is improved via a hand- or knee-activated device.

Italy's Autosprint hinted that the F-duct will however have minimal effects on the Monza circuit, as the characteristics of this venue already require minimal downforce from the F1 cars. Consequently, not fitting the device would make more sense than using it.

Both Spa and Monza should suit our package better than the Hungaroring,” had argued defending F1 champion Jenson Button after the Hungarian Grand Prix, considering that these two upcoming races will be influenced decisively by engine power, rather than aerodynamics.

Although no official statement has been made by McLaren regarding this topic, it is expected for them to scrap F-duct as soon as the Spa weekend ends. Whether the other teams using it will do the same – Red Bull, Ferrari or even Renault, who are debuting the F-duct this weekend – we're yet to find out.
