As if it wasn’t obvious enough, McLaren confirmed to Top Gear that the Speedtail would develop in excess of 986 horsepower. Or 1,000 PS if you’re living in a country where the metric system is used. The more surprising aspect of this story, however, is how the BP23 Hyper-GT will develop that output.
Speaking at an event where future owners were in attendance, chief executive officer Mike Flewitt dropped a bombshell on everyone. “We’ve got a slightly different hybrid application,” he said, drawing a parallel to the plug-in hybrid system in the McLaren P1.

On a more curious note, Flewitt told that “we’re not chasing top speed for the sake of it.” Read what you will into that, but the head honcho might be pointing out how the Speedtail will also offer superlative comfort for three passengers and the corner-carving capability that one would expect from the Senna.

The Speedtail “has an amazing top speed, but that’s a result of the engineering that’s gone into the car, not a target of the car,” Flewitt told the British magazine. On full song, the spiritual successor of the F1 and P1 will shoot past 243 miles per hour, making it the fastest road-going McLaren ever.

As for the suck-squeeze-bang-blow part of the deal, there’s no denying the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 in the 720S and Senna will serve as the building block. Already proven to 800 PS (789 horsepower) and 800 Nm (590 pound-feet) in the Senna, the M840T fits like a hand in glove with the nature of the Speedtail.

Already sold out, McLaren will build 106 examples of the breed at $2.2 million each. That’s more than $233 million without even looking at the options list, of which heaven only knows the percentage of the net income.

A unique car in the segment, the Speedtail will definitely be a McLaren to remember. Look forward to seeing the BP23 Hyper-GT in the flesh this October.
