McLaren Says MP4-12C Is Sold Out for the Next 3 Years

When the British supercar manufacturer revealed the MP4-12C in late 2009, extremely positive feedback was received, but what nobody would have expected was for it to be out of stock years from now.

But this is exactly what happened, as recent reports suggest that the McLaren Automotive’s order books for the supercar are full for the next three years. And no, boosting production levels is not an option the manufacturer takes into consideration.

Before rushing to conclusions, let us tell you that there’s a logical explanation to that: it seem s that producing less cars will lead to bigger profit margins for authorized dealers, while increasing the car’s residual value. That is why McLaren will produce only 1,000 units per year next year, with the number to go up slightly depending on circumstances.

“The key is making the dealership profitable. We will produce less cars but the dealers must have more cars than the competition because the long-term goal is profitability,”
Ian Gorsuch, regional director of McLaren Automotive, was quoted as saying by Asia One.

“We will produce less cars but the dealers must have more cars than the competition because the long-term goal is profitability,”
he added.

We’ll remind you the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 592 hp at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) between 3,000 rpm to 7,000 rpm. This amount of power propels the supercar to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.3 seconds, with a top speed clocked in at 205 mph. Pricing for the MP4-12C starts at $231,400.
