An automaker with the attention to detail that only McLaren can pull off isn’t devoid of faults. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the British company is recalling 2,763 vehicles because a foam pad may retain moisture.
“So what?” Well, the foam pad is located underneath the fuel tank, and the tank is made of metal. Humidity translates to corrosion, and corrosion may lead to a vehicle fire in the worst-case scenario.

From the Part 573 safety recall report, we understand that McLaren has first encountered this problem on January 14th last year when a customer in Latvia reported that he could smell gasoline coming from underneath his 570GT. Having replaced the fuel tank, the dealer sent the faulty tank and subsequently reported the issue to the headquarters in Woking, the UK.

But wait, there’s more! McLaren sent the tank to the supplier to conduct an analysis on the root cause of the problem, and the results rolled in on May 13th in the guise of speculation. Namely, the potential cause had something to do with the micro-poration of the tank and salt water.

As opposed to the Big Three in Detroit, McLaren had the inspiration to monitor warranty claims to establish if this was an isolated incident or not. The automaker didn’t wait too long because another customer who also owns a 570GT reported gasoline odor in February 2020. Thanks to this incident, headquarters decided to open an internal investigation into the matter.

Pretty much every supercar from the Sports Series to the 720S and limited-edition Senna is under recall, namely models built from May 1st, 2016 to March 20th, 2020. McLaren didn’t mention a thing about the Elva or Speedtail, Ultimate Series models that share a lot of bits and bobs with the 720S and Senna. The British automaker didn’t mention the 765LT either.

Dealers have been instructed to remove the foam pad, inspect the fuel tank for corrosion, and replace the tank if needed. “What happens to the foam pad, though?” Well, there is no remedy component. The pad in question is a NVH component, and its absence doesn’t affect the integrity of the vehicle.
