McLaren P1 GTR is One Step Closer to Racing

The McLaren P1 GTR Design Concept was just introduced last month at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, but McLaren is already hard at work getting this racecar ready for competition. While it plans on showing off the P1 GTR Design Concept and a new bespoke MSO 650S Coupe at this weekend’s Chantilly Arts & Elegance in France, we also get a quick update about the P1 GTR’s progress.

Up to this point, McLaren says that the racecar’s development was focused on the powertrain, and we can understand why. The upgraded hybrid powertrain will see the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 and electric drive system combine for a total output of 986 hp (1,000 PS) compared to the 903 hp (915 PS) available on the street-legal P1. The above prototype shows the testing of the cars drivetrain and center-locking wheels devoid of all the aero enhancements visible on the Design Concept.

Once aero testing has been performed, it will be interesting to see if any changes are made to the design of racecar including the front splitter, the aero wings along the rocker panel and the massive, fixed rear wing we saw at Pebble Beach. McLaren still hasn’t said when it will begin producing the P1 GTR, but it did add that it will wait until after the final P1 is built before focusing on the track car.

As far as this racing prototype goes, it replaces the Design Concept’s livery inspired by the Le Mans-winning 1994 F1 GTR with an interesting swirly, black-and-white camouflage that could very well depict various racetracks around the world. The redundant production and racing-spec A-pillar side mirrors add an interesting look as well.

At the French concours d’elegance taking place this weekend, it sounds like visitors will be able to see the same P1 GTR Design Concept from Pebble in addition to yet another example of a bespoke McLaren 650S Coupe built by McLaren Special Operations (MSO). This one-off 650S has a monochromatic paint job that is only broken up by the black mirrors, wheels and rear diffuser. Inside, MSO has lined the car with black Alcantara with orange stitching with plenty of exposed carbon fiber and gloss black trim.
