When McLaren announced its intention of launching even cheaper cars than we’ve been used to expect from the British brand, the world stopped and reflected for a while. That’s because Porsche’s iconic 911 Turbo and Turbo S models would be challenged from that day forth by the Woking-based manufacturer as well.
That’s a big deal, no matter how you look at it. Zuffenhausen's 911 Turbo models have been setting benchmarks over the last decades, and they did so well-deservingly. This means the king will be hard to overthrow, but if there’s one name out there that may be able to do it, that will be McLaren.
And the Brits will do so with the Sports Series, a whole new range that will kick off with the 570S Coupe model which has just entered production. The announcement came from Jolyon Nash, the Executive Director for Sales and Marketing at McLaren Automotive, who said the following:
“The start of production of the new Sports Series cars is a pivotal moment for McLaren Automotive. In our short history, we have produced a range of supercars and hypercars targeted at a core, enthusiast buyer. Since 2011, our sales have increased year-on-year with corresponding developments in revenues and profits. The Sports Series is targeted towards a new buyer and opens McLaren up to the sports car market that we have not served to date.”
The McLaren Production Center in Woking will build only the 570S Coupe for the moment, while the 540C Coupe will be added to the assembly line in 2016. The first car has already been delivered to a dealership in the UK, and 1,000 more owners are waiting for theirs to arrive.
As for the specs, the 570S Coupe has a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 570 HP and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed SSG gearbox for an acceleration time of 3.2 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph).
At the same time, the Porsche 911 Turbo S has 560 HP and 700 Nm (215 lb-ft) of torque coming from a 3.8-liter flat-six engine, to all four corners of the car via a 7-speed PDK gearbox. The acceleration time is slated to be as short as 3.1 seconds from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph).
Pricing for the 570S Coupe starts at £143,250 in the UK, while the Porsche 911 Turbo S kicks things off at £142,120. In the US, prices start at $184,900 for the Briton and $182,700 for the German. As you can see, it couldn’t have been closer. What would your pick be?
