“We're very confident that our car is entirely legal - and we're not aware of any protest. In fact, we've spoken to Ferrari this morning and they're not aware of any protest either,” said the spokesman, as reported by the Autosport publication.
The protest was allegedly lodged by the two teams regarding a slot on the MP4-25's rear wing that is helping the car reduce drag and increase their speed in straight line by approximately 10kph.
“There's a bit of a fuss over McLaren's rear wing. They have a slot on it and they can pick up a lot of straight-line speed. I think it will get resolved before the first race. We've asked the FIA for clarification although I think Ferrari are probably more excited than we are to be honest,” Horner was quoted as saying, while also revealing he thinks the design is quite legal (as he's only seeking clarification on the matter).
What we do know is that McLaren Mercedes is the only team in the F1 paddock to use this type of design for their rear wing. Should the FIA clarify the matter in due time, we'll probably see the majority of the teams switch to that design in the upcoming few weeks (in case, of course, it fits their aerodynamic package for the first few rounds of the 2010 season).
As for Ferrari, while some claim they joined Red Bull in their appeal, some confirm differently. The Scuderia is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
