McLaren Gets Suspended 3-Race Ban from the FIA

The International Automobile Federation have issued a quick statement earlier today, announcing the penalties for team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. As team principal Martin Whitmarsh pleaded guilty to all 5 charges issued by the World Motor Sport Council, the meeting in Paris was quite short. While handing a 3-race ban to the Woking-based team, the WMSC decided, however, to suspend the sentence that it deemed appropriate.

The FIA argued their decision by the fact that McLaren have not contested to any of the charges.

Having regard to the open and honest way in which McLaren Team Principal, Mr Martin Whitmarsh, addressed the WMSC and the change in culture which he made clear has taken place in his organization, the WMSC decided to suspend the application of the penalty it deems appropriate,” said the FIA statement.

That penalty is a suspension of the team from three races of the FIA Formula One World Championship. This will only be applied if further facts emerge regarding the case or if, in the next 12 months, there is a further breach by the team of article 151c of the International Sporting Code,” added the document.

McLaren have appeared before the WMSC to explain their actions in the post-race investigation conducted by the FIA stewards after the Aussie GP. The team was found guilty of lying to the stewards concerning a race incident between Lewis Hamilton and Toyota's Jarno Trulli, as they admitted themselves later on.

FIA is to issue a complete statement on the reasons for the aforementioned penalty later this week.
