McLaren has been one of the few teams to be so late in announcing their young drivers' lineup for the Jerez test, as Toro Rosso, Red Bull, BMW, Ferrari, Renault, Silver Arrows, Force India and Williams F1 have already confirmed their rookie drivers for this week.
“I've gone over this moment so many times in my mind, so it's very exciting to be getting this opportunity to test with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team at Jerez this week. My aim is to enjoy the experience, but also to learn as much as I can from it. If possible, I'd also like to be able to help the team with their preparations for the 2010 season,” said Turvey, according to British magazine Autosport.
Turvey competed in the World Series by Renault Series in 2009, where he scored a 4th place in the overall classification (Carlin Motorsport). In addition, he started off in the GP2 Asia Series with iSport International, where he managed to score 4 points in the 2009/10 season opener at Abu Dhabi.
“We're extremely proud of our commitment to young talent and the efforts we've made to ensure the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver winners are given the experience of a lifetime when they test with us. A drive in a race-wining Formula 1 car is every racing driver's dream, and I'm sure Oliver will use this week's test as the perfect opportunity to broaden his experience as he continues his successful single-seater career,” added McLaren's team principal Martin Whitmarsh.
Turvey might, in fact, be driving for a testing/reserve seat with McLaren in 2010, as the team's current tester Pedro de la Rosa is linked with several racing seats for the 2010 F1 season (Campos GP, US F1 or even Peter Sauber's team).
