McLaren Chosen to Supply Electric Motors for Formula E

Now that it’s all official and Formula E is happening, an engine supplier had to be found. We first reported that McLaren was interested in joining the newly-created racing series, as an actual racing team, yet now their focus has shifted towards being the provider of the electric motors.

McLaren were the natural choice as the supplier, as they already supply all the current F1 teams with the standard electric control units which go into every single car. McLaren Electronic Systems will be the provider of motors, transmissions, control units, electronics and what else may be needed to power the cars.

However, the actual Formula E cars will be assembled by a company called Spark Racing Technology. The president of the company, Frederic Vasseur, said: “I am proud and happy to give birth to this project that is innovative and extremely rewarding for a company both technically and philosophically. Personally, I can write a new chapter, regardless of my other ventures in motorsport. Confidence and commitment from our partner McLaren is a guarantee of quality and reliability without which this project would not have been possible.

Formula E begins in 2014 and it should be quite interesting to see how/if it catches on...
