McLaren and Mercedes AMG Strife on Twitter Over Lewis Hamilton

They say squabbling over celebrities and their lifestyle is a matter of tabloid factor. What if two Formula One teams do it over a driver like Lewis Hamilton? We’ll consider it regular disputing with subtle shades of marketing, instead. Because, let’s face it, a little bit of bicker now and then keeps the fans close.

It’s been months since the negotiations between the two-time Formula One World Champion and Mercedes-AMG F1 team first started. Rumors in the biz are that a decision was finally taken, as the announcement of the new deal is planned for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. According to The Telegraph, once bonuses are taken into account, Hamilton’s new three-year deal could be worth in excess of £30 million ($46.46 million).

Should this be the reason this little brawl went on? We have no idea, but it is worth mentioning anyway. This whole little dispute revolves around Lewis Hamilton’s freshly bought McLaren P1, which obviously is a head turner. Whether or not one of McLaren’s employees took the picture at their headquarters or it’s a random snap, they managed to capture the F1 champ with his new hypercar.

Hey, Lewis Hamilton! Nice to see you still like McLaren cars, old friend!” they quoted next to the image post on Twitter. That happened yesterday. Some hours later, for apparently no reason whatsoever, Mercedes-AMG F1 posted a picture of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL quoting: “@McLarenF1 @LewisHamilton Well, they do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ;)

The fact that Hamilton is not racing for McLaren anymore is quite a big deal considering the history the two have. We said it before; the F1 champ was just ten-years-old when he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at the Autosport Awards ceremony and told him he wants to race for the team. 12 years later, in 2007, he drove for McLaren, making his Formula One debut.
