McLaren 720S Drag Races Dodge Demon, Runs Out Of Luck

Remember the days when the street car drag racing scene was dominated by machines like the Dodge Demon and the McLaren 720S? Well, those times are now behind us, but the two velocity toys continue to deliver impressive confrontations, despite not beind all that fresh anymore.

Truth be told, the Demon and the 720S has totally different fates - while everybody expected both to be uber-quick in a straight line, the Woking animal exceeded those expectations, while the muscle car fell slightly below them.

You see, when the Mopar people announced the 9.65s quarter-mile time of the Challenger SRT Demon, everybody was amazed. However, the big coup can only hit that number in perfect conditions, while most run see the slab of America pulling low-10s passes.

As for the Macca, this is already a high-9s car on the stock tires. Nevertheless, when the rear axle receives a pair of Toyo R888R goodies, the factory form of the mid-engined animal allows it to deliver 9.7s runs, which makes it quicker than the P1.

In fact, you'll be able to check out a confrontation between the two in the piece of footage at the bottom of the page.

And while you can head over to the 9:19 point of the clip for the battles, the rest of the video is also worthy of attention.

That's because this brings together footage from multiple races, basically being a compilation of Demons leaving supercars trailing in their wake. Oh, and there's also a bonus race, one that sees a Dodge Demon duking it out with a Bentley.

Of course, we can't talk drag racing without mentioning the tech state of the participating velocity tools. And while I'm not sure about the state of the grey Demon, I can confirm that the red one has been modded, small wheel conversion and all.
