McLaren 675LT Spider Reportedly Confirmed

Ever since the McLaren 675LT was initially launched, the media has been reporting that a Spider version should come out. While initially saying a stern ‘NO’ to such a proposition, the people over in Woking seemingly changed their minds.

The news came via Autovisie and given the reputation of the Dutch press outlet, we’re tempted to believe that there actually was an official confirming the plans of McLaren to build a model with a removable top.

The decision might’ve come after the 675LT model was sold out pretty quickly, being built in only 500 units and with a hefty starting price of £259,500. The Spider should be even more expensive and could prove to be a veritable cash cow. Of course, we should also expect a limited number of models to be offered.

As for the technical details, the specifications should remain the same. Under the bonnet lies the familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine of the 650S and 675LT, taken up to 675 HP and 700 Nm (517 lb-ft) of torque while the transmission should be the same 7-speed dual-clutch unit.

While on the Coupe this configuration allows the car to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds, the Spider should be just as fast. We’ve seen the same results in the case of the MP4-12C and its Spider version, the two cars being identical with or without a roof in terms of performance.

Compared to the 650S, the LT has an elongated rear wing that offers it an increase in downforce of about 50%, making the 675LT version more capable on the track. The car was inspired by the 1997 F1 LT version, the upgraded brother of the legendary supercar of the 1990s.

The top speed should remain fixed at 205 mph (330 km/h) even though we’re thinking that the missing roof might slow it down a little. Our first indicator to whether this comes true or not should come in the shape of test vehicles spotted by our spy photographers. Stay tuned as they might show up any day now.
