Over the last few years, McLaren gathered a lot of fans very quickly, which is basically a testament to the quality of the road cars they are now producing.
The first modern McLaren that signaled the brand's rebirth was the ill-named MP4-12C. It didn't have a very long lifespan, being replaced with the 650S only three years later. Yet nobody complained, as the new McLaren borrowed heavily from the P1, the Woking company's top model launched in between the two.

The McLaren 650S looked very much like a mini-P1, and luckily for the company as well as for those who bought it, it also drove pretty much in the same way. In fact, this technical prowess is what stands at the root of McLaren's success lately, with its cars having gained this aura of nearly perfectly engineered machines.

The 650S Spider Can-Am, on the other hand, is a nod to the company's past. It marks the anniversary of 50 years of Can-Am racing that will be celebrated next year and, fittingly enough, only 50 units of this limited edition model will ever be built.

Responsible for the development of the 650S Spider Can-Am is the MSO division (McLaren Special Operations), the same guys responsible for the crazy McLaren X-1.

The engine stays exactly the same and there aren't that many stylistic changes either, but a keen eye will be able to spot some of them. Also, keen ears will discern a different note in 650S Spider Can-Am's exhaust sound, as it uses a newly developed stainless steel system.

Back to the car's design, there are some vintage elements to be found throughout its body, but nothing that succeeds in making the 650S Spider Can-Am look any more like a precision tool. The hardtop is made out of carbon fiber, and while it stays black no matter what, the rest of the car can be had in three different colors: Mars Red, Onyx Black, or Papaya Spark.

With a price tag of £255,850 ($395,352 or €347,927) and only 50 of them available, the McLaren 650S Can-Am will surely turn into a collector's item. If you're not after something that exclusive, though, but still want a convertible McLaren, you can hold on to your money until next year when the 675LT Spider will be launched.
