McLaren 570S Humiliates 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus in a Drag Race Against All Odds

It seems that with each occasion the McLaren 570S gets put to the test, Woking's so-called "entry-level" machine takes out the competition in an amazing manner.

The latest episode of this kind saw the 570S duking it out with the 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus. The two speed demons were brought together by the velocity-obsessed team over at cars.co.za, with the South African battle obviously involving a drag race.

The quarter-mile adventure saw the two mid-engined animals sprinting on the Killarney Raceway, with the battle turning out to be a surprising one. At first, the R8's all-wheel-drive gave it the take-off edge, with the McLaren never managing to make up until the 1,320-feet finish line was crossed.

Let's take some time for a bit of on-paper racing involving these two delicious contraptions

In theory, this sounded perfectly normal. In terms of the power-to-weight ratio, both supercars sit at around 2.7 kilograms per horsepower, while the Mac only packs a minor 29 lb-ft (40 Nm) advantage.

Both the 2016 Audi R8 V10 Plus and the McLaren 570S are able to deliver mid-10s quarter-mile passes, but we'll mention the Audi R8's AWD advantage once again.

Returning to the real-world sprinting that took place in South Africa

Well, once the McLaren's tires were warmed up, the two raced again and the finishing order was reversed. This is also a good lesson when it comes to understanding how important it is to bring the tires up to temperature for a race.

And things get even more interesting, albeit with a bit of an apple-to-orange comparo twist, if we remember the time when the Audi R8 V10 Plus beat the Lamborghini Huracan to 62 mph.

Interestingly, this is just the first part of the comparo, with the second one set to bring us a time attack battle between the two beasts. And that's where the tires will get seriously warmed up.
