When the BMW 1M Coupe came out, the world feared that the E92 M3 was in trouble, even though the new car had 80 HP less. These days, that isn’t a problem anymore as the tuning options for the E82 Coupe are extremely varied and can take the N54 engine up to 400 HP and even more.
One such company is Mcchip-DKR that unveiled a new kit for the 1M about a week ago. Their take on the bi-turbo inline 6-cylinder engine of the car will take it from 340 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque up to 397 HP and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft).

Looking over the current line-up, their Stage 2 1M is dangerously close to the current M4 model. Sure, it has 34 less horsepower but more than makes up for it with 80 extra Nm compared to the bigger Coupe’s 550.

Could that mean that the Mcchip-DKR Stage 2 1M is faster than the M4? Well, comparing the weight of the two, the M4 is, once again, lagging behind with around 100 kg (220 lbs) more to carry around. However, the 1M is only available with a manual 6-speed gearbox while the new kid on the block is also available with a super-fast 7-speed DCT gearbox. The race would be close.

In the meantime, while we’re not fantasizing about such a match-up, you should know that apart from the usual ECU remap you’ll also need a new exhaust, of course. Installing it will take a full day.
