Remember the flying cars in the American cartoon sitcom “The Jetsons”, that were folding into a suitcase so you could take it with you? Well, we are not too far from that sort of technology, as Mazda made a prototype folding car back in 1991.
Back in 1991, a Mazda engineer asked himself what could be done to provide proper personal transportation with increased mobility.
They made a three-wheeler that could be folded into a suitcase and could reach 43 km/h (27 mph).The assembly takes about 15-20 seconds. For a minimum safety it was equipped with turn signals, brake lights and even headlights to see and to be seen on the road.
Power was provided by a 40cc two-stroke engine and provided the small fuel tank, it could run for approximately 2 hours.
The three-wheeled suitcase never saw production though. Who knows, maybe the automaker is waiting for the right technology to be developed and build the real folding flying car from the cartoons.
