Mazda3 Gets 53.5 Mpg Diesel Engine

The 1.6-liter four cylinder diesel engine in the Mazda3 hatch and sedan has been revised to produce less emissions and achieve higher mpg figures. In addition, it's more powerful and can be coupled with a new six-speed gearbox.

Thanks to the new engine map, the car benefits from an additional 5 horsepower (taking the total to 115 hp) and 30 more Nm (22lb-ft) of torque. The car now has 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque that is available between 1,700-2,700 rpm. The power is also delivered at 3,600 rpm, which is 400 rpm lower than the old model. The new version 1.6 MZ-CD needs just 4.4 l/100 km (53.5 US mpg) on the combined cycle.

According to the official figures, the extra power does not make the car go any faster than the previous generation. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) dash takes place in 11 seconds flat, while top speed is also the same at 186 km/h (116 mph).

The engine was revised to comply with the new Euro 5 emissions standards. Just 117 grams of CO2 are now coming out of the exhaust in the combined cycle. This is partially thanks to the new maintenance-free diesel particulate filter (DPF) that doesn’t need any additive to burn through the particulate matter.

The engine has also been fitted to the Mazda2, Mazda5 and Mazda5 MPV. Mazda did not give any information on pricing for the car powered by the new engine, though we can expect a redesigned front and more interior features coming as standard. The second generation Mazda3 was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Auto Show.
