Mazda announced an all-new 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine in the summer of 2014, at roughly the same time as they showed the Hazumi design study. Naturally, the unit became available on the Mazda2 supermini, followed by the CX-3 crossover.
While the company's first diesel four-cylinder remains under development for the US market, Europe just got the Mazda's first compact car powered by the 1.5.

Starting December 1, the Mazda3 sedan and hatchback will be sold in Britain with a 105 PS 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine. It's the same one offered by the smaller model and with emissions of 99 grams per kilometer, it should give the Ford Focus a run for its money.

The entry-level mill sits alongside two versions of the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D (150 PS and 165) unit and is available in all trim levels from £18,895 on-the-road. That makes it about £1,900 more expensive than the basic 100 PS gasoline engine and £750 cheaper than 150 PS 2.2-liter diesel.

We know quite a bit about the engine already, but the gist of it is that besides 105 PS, it also produces a respectable 270 Nm of torque. Some of the Mazda3's natural poke will be lost, but with 0 to 62 mph taking 11 seconds, you can't call this an underpowered car. Or can you?

To keep its dirty diesel engine nice and clean, Mazda used several combustion temperature-reducing measures like high- and low-pressure exhaust-gas recirculation systems (the exhaust replaces some oxygen into the combustion chamber, reducing heat and limiting NOx production), high-dispersion fuel injectors, an air-to-water intercooler, and a low 14.8:1 compression ratio.

There's no mention of the I-Eloop brake energy recovery system anywhere in the press release, but it should still be in there. Also, you can have this engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

“Putting the 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-D into the Mazda3 will significantly increase the appeal of the Mazda3 to those fleets who prefer their drivers to run vehicles with a sub 2.0-litre engine, and with CO2 emissions from 99g/km this will also make the car more popular with drivers who place low BIK taxation near the top of their consideration criteria. I am confident that the addition of the Mazda3 1.5-litre diesel derivative to Mazda’s already extensive corporate vehicle choice list will enhance our fleet appeal even further when the car goes on sale on the 1st December,”
said Steve Tomlinson, Head of Fleet Mazda UK.

Fun fact: 42 percent of C-segment diesel sales in Britain deliver sub 100g/km CO2 emissions.
