Mazda’s rotary engine has been the subject of many rumors, as company CEO Takashi Tamanouchi has assured the world that the carmaker is working on a new generation of the powerplant.
Fortunately, Mazda has recently decided to calm the spirits, using its Japanese Twitter account to reinforce the statement:

Mazda is aiming to achieve a breakthrough with the ‘Skyactiv’ technology, and we are zealously working on new models to house the next generation rotary engine. Thank you for your continued support!"
There are two main guesses for what metal will hold the new engine: first, Mazda could give us a successor of the RX-7 sports car, and/or we could receive a production version of the Shinari concept you see rendered here.
